We sometimes wish there were some magic formula designed to turn us into best-selling authors overnight. We long to be acknowledged by the wider public as well as the industry specialists as being talented storytellers so we are looking for clues between the lines, seeking direction from more experienced writers…Some will regurgitate does and don’ts which won’t necessarily work for you. Why? Because there was never a time or place for stagnation when it comes to writing principles and methodology.
The evolution of language, of society and of cultural and historical awareness have impacted how books that broke the mold have been received during the lifetime of their authors.
Technology is also on our side with less gatekeeping happening based on perceived impropriety of tone, form and topic.
Questions which can help you find clarity
-
Who is my main target audience?
-
Is my use of language stepping away from lainstream expectations? If so, why? Is the reason valid?
-
If my use of language and tropes is unusual, is it enough to durably confuse my main target audience?
-
Can I tell if I’m struggling with syntax and narrative structure vs subverting them for my own reasons?
-
Am I ready to defend my writing choices to a qualified audience (industry specialists, more experienced writers, critics, academics…)?
Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your mastery of this craft can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
It all begins with an idea. You can’t find your voice if you don’t start looking for it right now. You may ir may not need the help of a language professional later down the line, before hitting that Publish button. Just keep in mind that the best result will come from working with someone who understands your background and your writing without judging or trying to erase culture-specific markers from these pages.
